This year was my first Christmas in London, and also my very first Christmas away from home. So instead of spending the day with my family fighting over what to watch on TV, I celebrated with my flatmates and London friends and it was absolutely perfect for my first Christmas away from home.
This year, Christmas started out with 10AM kir royales (with a side of tea and toast for me!), before moving on to the pub to see some local friends. Then home for a delicious three course meal, Champagne, wine, Amaretto, classic 1940s films and sharing stories of our childhood Christmases until well after midnight.
And that’s when it all kind of clicked for me: home is what you make of it, happiness is only as strong as you allow yourself to feel it. I don’t think I’ve ever been so happy or content to spend a holiday without my family as I was this Christmas because I was determined to enjoy it, to be truly appreciative and grateful for everything wonderful I have in my life, no matter where I was.
