Smoothies – I’m addicted!

According to the NHS a 150ml smoothie can count as more than one of your 5-a-day if it contains at least 80g of two types of fruit and/or veg and all the the edible pulped fruit or vegetable. Ever since I picked up a blender in the Boxing Day sales, I’ve been making fruit and veg smoothies out of just about everything and anything I’ve got in my kitchen – or is on offer at the shop – to help squeeze more produce into my diet.

Here are a few of my favourite smoothie recipes so far, and they’re all vegan-friendly:

Green smoothie (pictured above)

  • 1x avocado
  • a few handfuls of spinach
  • 1x kiwi
  • handful of fresh mint to taste
  • a squeeze of fresh lime to taste
  • coconut milk to taste/consistency preferred

Thanks to the avocado this green smoothie is really creamy, despite being dairy-free. While spinach can sometimes taste bitter in smoothies, the kiwi, lime and mint helps bite through this, and the coconut milk sweetens it up. All in all it’s a glass full of green deliciousness.

Avovado, banana, apple and almond milk breakfast smoothie

Breakfast Smoothie:

  • 1x avocado
  • 1x banana
  • 1x apple
  • almond milk to taste

Between the avocado and banana, this smoothie is really filling and one of my favourites for breakfast! I love how it tastes, and just one of these keeps me full-up till lunchtime. The only problem is waking up early enough to prepare one before work – I am so not a morning person!

coconut milk, mango, banana and blackberry

Berry Tasty:

  • 1x mango
  • 1x banana
  • handful of blackberries
  • coconut milk to taste/consistency preferred

I love this one as a snack, and if you freeze the bananas and blackberries before blending it’s incredibly refreshing. (Even if you don’t freeze the fruit it’s still really tasty!) With all that fruit it’s very sweet, and I find the natural fruit sugars really pack a punch for a mid-afternoon energy boost.
