Wear what you love

Katie wears a pink, blue and white multi colour vintage maxi dress with long sleeves, high neck, matching belt and black shoes and a small black shoulder bag. Her hair is pulled back in a pony tail and she's standing in front of the surfer shacks at Copa Club on Tower Bridge.

This dress belonged to my grandmother back in the late 1960s. Could have been early 1970s, but because of the pink my mom is guessing late 1960s.) And a couple years ago my mom gave it to me because it fit (almost) perfectly. (Grandma had a slightly different build than I do, but the fit is close enough that I can wear it.)

I’ve been wanting to wear it for a while, but I always felt a bit self conscious that it was too “loud”. I felt like people would stare, would judge. I was nervous I’d feel out of place wearing it.

But you know what? I love it. And I recognise that I’m incredibly privileged to have a possession from one of my ancestors; not everyone gets to enjoy this.

So in honour of my grandma’s awesome style and to celebrate #SecondHandSeptember, I wore it to brunch at Copa Club last September.

Remember: the most sustainable item you can wear is the one that’s already in your wardrobe.
