Celebrating the 4th of July in England always feels a bit funny. Partly because England just isn’t the USA, and partly because the 4th of July celebrates America’s independence from England. Awkward.
Anyhow, each year that I’ve lived in England I’ve managed to do something to celebrate, and this year it was making red velvet whoopie pies and decorating cupcakes with Google Local London at Outsider Tart!
David and Louis talked us through the red velvet whoopie recipe, helping the baking-impaired of us (i.e.: me) as we went. When our batter was ready we popped our whoopie pies in the oven, left the heat of the kitchen, and head upstairs to decorate cupcakes! But it wasn’t all just fun and games. We turned it into a competition!
Using the same red, white and blue frosting and sprinkles (aka: jimmies!) we decorated our best 4th of July themed cupcakes for David to judge. One of my cupcakes was lucky enough to be picked as one of the four winners, so I got to come home with a signed copy of Baked in America. I can’t wait to try it! 🙂
