Recently I attended a Pinterest workshop for bloggers at Pinterest HQ in London where I got to meet a whole host of friendly and clever bloggers with really great taste. (Tastemakers, if you will, and their profiles are all linked at the bottom of this post.)
We were there to learn as many Pinteresting tips as possible to help us with our blogging efforts, which should help increase blog traffic, encourage more readers to discover our posts and generally help us be a bit more successful with what we do. I walked away with 4 pages of handwritten notes, and have condensed them into 5 key tips for bloggers…
1. Optimise your blog for pinning
This means use vertical images, get the Pin It button, and use lots of gorgeous imagery and pictures. If you make your existing platforms beautiful and optimised for Pinterest, your readers will be more likely to begin pinning your content.
2. Use Rich Pins
Rich Pins are Pins that include extra information right on the Pin itself, and there are six types of Rich Pins: app, movie, recipe, article, product and place. So, for example, if you use a recipe Rich Pin and include courgette as an ingredient in a lasagna recipe, then your pin would be relevant for the search results of ‘recipes with courgette’ as well as ‘lasagna recipes’.

3. Check your Pinterest stats
See what people are sharing from your website, so you get an idea of what kind of content to create. This doesn’t need to mean a full step-change if everyone’s pinning the one recipe you ever posted and your blog is primarily about beauty! But you can always look at that one post and see if there’s something special about it that made it a bit more Pinterest-friendly, and try to recreate that with the content you prefer to post about.
4. Promote your Pinterest presence
This is one I’ve always felt a bit shy about doing, but it’s so true: if you don’t tell people that you’re writing a blog / on Twitter / on Instagram / on Pinterest, then how will they know they can hang out with you there? So don’t be afraid to tell your followers that you’re on Pinterest, and ask them to follow you or pin your content. I think the correct (and my favourite!) phrase to include here is: if you don’t ask, then you don’t get.
5. Be selective about joining group boards
Not everyone pins nicely, and it’d be awful if someone in the group you were taking part in pinned content that didn’t really fit. The horror story we were told was about a male fashion blogger whose feed was taken over by pornographic images because someone on a group board decided to pin loads of that content. This blogger was embarrassed he felt obliged to apologise to his community. While that’s probably the worst that can happen, remember it’s OK to be selective about which groups you choose to pin with!
BONUS: Keep your board titles short, yet descriptive. If the titles are too long it kind of ‘breaks’ the design, and doesn’t look that great. Long board titles are great for search, but not Pinterest’s design layout. While not many people will be looking at your profile page you still want to make sure it looks its best. If your titles are descriptive the pins are more likely to show up in searches.
